Flower Sharks?

I was sitting in our back yard today and saw this little bird eating blossoms off of our neighbor’s fruit tree. I wonder if it’s the same Purple Finch from yesterday. Another day, another flower buffet? . . . Looking at the stripes and speckles, I don’t think it’s the exact same one, but I could be mistaken.

I think female (and/or immature) Finches don’t really get much attention in the birding world. They’re fairly ubiquitous, they lack any bold colors, and they just tend to blend in with the scenery.

Sometimes they even eat that same scenery.

At the same time, they have a sort of natural elegance to them. They’re not too big or too loud or too showy. They’re basically the anti-Peacock of the bird world.

Maybe they would get more attention if they had a cooler name. . . .

Flower Sharks?

Petal Shredders?

Blossom Slayers?

Seed Demons?

I must write a letter to the Official World Bird Naming Committee forthwith!
