As I walked past a window today, I happened to see a tiny glint of red speeding around the skies above our street. OK, maybe it more of an orange. Let’s say it was at least reddish . Anyway, going outside, there was an unusually high-pitched buzzing in the air. And when the buzzing stopped briefly for a few seconds on a utility line, there it was: a rufous hummingbird.
There was the slim possibility that it was actually an Allen’s hummingbird, but the relative scarcity of green on its back made it unlikely. (And getting a look at the slight difference in their tail feathers would have been difficult.)
We normally tend to only see (or hear) Anna’s around here, so it was a bit of a treat. Here are a few pics I snapped during its visit:
