Last week, my wife and I visited her parents in Fremont to celebrate Father’s Day. After several days of temperatures reaching up to 108°F in Sonoma, it was nice to enjoy some cooler (or perhaps more accurately, “less deathly hot”) weather by the Bay. My green-thumbed in-laws have a beautiful and colorful backyard, and I walked about outside for a little while with my camera to enjoy the sights and sounds of their gardens. My late father loved photography too, and I only wish I could have gone photo exploring with him.
Here are some miscellaneous photos I took in the yard:
A young fledgling mockingbird showed off its ability to stand on a fence.
. . . and to stand on a tree branch too.
It did look a bit gawky, however.
Meanwhile, a grown-up Mockingbird sang up a storm perched atop a tree nearby.
And this family of Starlings sat together chatting on a tree branch.
For some reason, the sight reminded me of an old Gary Larson Far Side comic. I imagined they were discussing something very mundane.
“Billy, I told you to use the bathroom BEFORE we left.”
An Anna’s hummingbird checked out a salvia.
A Black Phoebe flitted about, catching tiny fluttery things in the rose garden.
House Finches fed at my father-in-law’s well-stocked bird feeder.
A lone crow hid in a tree. Perhaps it was trying to avoid a murder?
And a very scruffy looking Scrub Jay sat high in a tree canopy, not seeming to move very much for a long time. I imagined it was the wise old watcher of the neighborhood.
All in all, I would say it was definitely a fine “Feathers Day.”
Plus purdy flowers!
