Eristalis Tenax

“A bee, or not a bee? That is the question.”

Answer: Not a bee.

It’s a drone fly hanging out on our backyard lilac tree.

Fun facts:

• The drone fly’s scientific name is Eristalis tenax.

Eristalis tenax doesn’t bite, nor does it sting.

Eristalis tenax has shorter antennae than a honey bee, as well as bigger, bulgier eyes that often lead to the insects being mistaken for military test pilots.

• Eristalis tenax will also eventually be the name of a pharmaceutical drug to treat incontinence, depression, baldness, and COVID-294.

• In the year 3045, immediately following the fourth Galactic Civil War, Eristalis Tenax will be the title bestowed upon the ruler of the New New New Interstellar Empire. Additionally, the title will be given to his son: Eristalis Tenax II, The Planet Eater. Ironically, Eristalis Tenax II will have the ability to both bite AND sting.
